JEANIE, n. Also jeannie. Sc. forms of Eng. jenny, a spinning machine (‡Ayr., Slk. 1959). Also used attrib. in combs. jeanie factory (Ayr. 1795 Stat. Acc.1 XX. 176), — house (Ayr. 1949), a spinning factory. See also Jennie.Ayr. 1795 Stat. Acc.1 VII. 33:
The Jeanies have been introduced and will give employment to boys and girls in spinning cotton.
Ayr. 1868 J. K. Hunter Artist's Life 46:
Dundonald could boast of a spinning factory, or Jeannie-house, as it used to be named.
Ayr. 1951 Stat. Acc.3 691:
A year later a twist mill of five-storeys for the spinning of cotton yarn had been built right in the centre of the holm, to be followed in three years by a “jeanie” factory.
