JEVEL, v., n.2 Also jevvel, javel. [dʒe:vl]
I. v. 1. tr. To joggle, to shake (Ags. 1808 Jam.), intr. to move obliquely (Lth. Ib.).
‡2. With in, to push in, found only as pa.p. javelt, staved in.Abd.15 c.1924:
Fat wye's the ribs o' the kist sae sair javelt in?
3. To spill a large quantity of liquid with a splash (Slk. 1825 Jam.; Rxb. 1923 Watson W.-B.).
II. n. The dashing of water (Lnk. 1825 Jam., jevel, jevvel).
[Freq. form of Jeve. The form javel found in sense I. 2., however, may be a palatalised form of Devel, to stun, q.v.]
