KLAVE, n., v. Also klaive (Marw.). [kle:v]
I. n. The bottom corners of a herring net (Cai. 1956), “the angle formed between the ‘back-rope' and ‘gevel rope'” (Ork. 1929 Marw.). See Bauk, n.3, Gavel.Cai. 1956:
“'E klave 'e net is no hauled yet”' i.e. anything may turn up yet.
II. v. To wind up a handline (in fishing) on a V-shaped reel (Cai. 1956).
[Norw. klave, a wooden neck-yoke for animals, an angle-shaped figure, O.N. klafi, a kind of forked stick, a branks put on the neck of cattle.]
