KNUT, v., n.1

I. v. To halt slightly, “especially used to denote the unpleasant jerk which a horse sometimes gives on his pastern, when he sets his foot on a round stone” (Slg. 1825 Jam.).

II. n. A jerk, a slight halt (Ib.).
