KUTTANOY, n. Also cuttanoy, kattanow (Marw.). A disturbance, shindy, uproar, annoyance (Sh. 1914 Angus Gl.; Ork. 1929 Marw.; Sh. 1948 New Shetlander (March–April) 15, Sh. 1960). [kʌtə′nɔi, kɑtə′nʌu]Sh.7 1938:
Dey wir sic a kuttanoy within da door 'at ye coodna mak' oot a wird 'at da man wis sayin'.
Sh. 1957 Sh. Folk Bk. III. 53:
Dey [the trows] used ta mak such a cattanoy ivery nicht at da folk could nedder rest nir sleep.
