LAFAYETTE, n. Also laviette (Inv.). A kind of jam sponge sandwich sold by bakers (Inv., Edb. 1920–60). [lɑfə′jɛt, ′lɑv-]

[Cf. U.S. Lafayette cake, a kind of sweet cake once popular in S. Carolina, so called in honour of the Marquis de Lafayette (1757–1834), ally of America in the War of Independence.]
