LEWER, n. Also lewre; lower. A lever, long pole used for levering (Gall. 1824 MacTaggart Gallov. Encycl. 315; Rxb. 1825 Jam.; Kcd.4 1900, lower). Also in n.Eng. dial. [′leuər, ′lʌu-]s.Sc. 1801 J. Leyden Complaynt Scot. 279:
The mouse proposes to join her in spinning; and inquires, “But where will I get a spindle, fair lady mine?” when the frog desires it to take “the auld mill lewer.”
