LIVE, n. Also livv, life (Ork. 1814 J. Shirreff Agric. Ork. 51). The rear piece of the old Orkney plough to which the skies or triple mould-boards were attached. [lɪv]Ork. 1734 P. Ork. A.S. I. 65:
Four ploughs, one of them having all furniture except Culter and Sock whereof three wanting Skys and lives.

[Appar. a variant of Luif, q.v., the span of the palm, because “the upper ends of the three ski pins must project above the wing of the markal pin the breadth of a married woman's hand, or livv” (G. Marwick Old Roman Plough (1936) 9).]
