LOWINS, n. In distilling: the low-quality spirit which results from the first distillation of the alcoholic solution or “wash” (Fif. 1825 Jam.).Rnf. 1790 A. Wilson Poems 91:
Synt down wi' whey, or whisky lowins.
Fif. 1825 Jam. s.v. Keechin:
After passing once through the still, it is called Lowins.
