MARSH-FOG, n.comb. A moss of the genus Sphagnum (Uls. 1962). See Fog.Ayr. 1811 W. Aiton Agric. Ayr. 474:
More than half of the sheep-walks, in the parishes of Dalmellington the two Cumnocks . . . etc. are of the nature of bent moss, covered with a green sward . . . the marsh fog (sphagnum palustre et polytrichen commune) in damp places.
