MELLGRAVE, n. Also melgraf (Lnk. 1825 Jam.). A quagmire, a patch of boggy ground, specif. one occurring as a break in a road.Gall. 1824 MacTaggart Gallov. Encycl. 339:
In roads which pass through soft countries, mellgraves most prevail; it is said that a horse with its rider once sank in a mellgrave somewhere in Ayrshire, and were never more heard of.
