MINGLE, n. Gen. in pl. [mɪŋl]
1. Mining: an iron frame carrying pulley blocks for raising coal from the workings (Sc. 1886 J. Barrowman Mining Terms 45). Also attrib. in 1845 quot. of a pit employing this apparatus.w.Lth. 1845 Stat. Acc.2 II. 70:
The seam of coal wrought in the mingle or engine pit which was the only one at work in 1832.
2. Weaving: the framework in which the pirns are set in a warping machine, the bank (Sc. c.1950).
[In 1., phs. a variant form of mangle ( > *mengle), from its similarity in appearance to the coal-raising apparatus. 2. may be a different word, e.g. from mingle, as the means by which spools of various colours can be blended in one web.]
