MULDOAN, n. The basking shark, Cetorrhinus maximus (ne.Sc. 1930 Fishery Board Gl.; Abd., Ayr 1963).Sc. 1952 Scots Mag. (Aug.) 388:
Fishermen called them [sharks] — "muldoan," "sailfish," "sunfish," and the Gaelic name cearbhan.

[Orig. doubtful, phs. a corruption of Gael. maol dobhran, the otter, transferred in sea-taboo language to the shark.]
