NUD, n., v.1 Also nodd (Jak.).

I. n. A slight jerk, a nibbling, as of fish at a baited hook (Sh. 1908 Jak. (1928)).Sh. 1899 J. Spence Folk-Lore 135:
He feels a heavy weight and knows it to be the nud o' a fish.

II. v. To nibble, jerk slightly.Sh. 1908 Jak. (1928):
To feel de fish noddin.
