PERMUTATION, n. Sc. Law usage: barter, exchange of goods (see quots.). Obs. in Eng. Orig. a Civil Law term.Sc. 1754 Erskine Principles iii. iii. § 4:
Permutation differs from a sale chiefly in this, that, in permutation, one subject is to be given in barter or exchange for another; whereas the price in a sale consists of current money.
Sc. 1838 W. Bell Dict. Law Scot. 732:
Permutation, or Barter; is the exchange of one moveable subject for another; and, by the law of Scotland, the contract is completed by consent alone, so as to enforce the subsequent exchange. By this contract the property is transferred.
Sc. 1896 W. K. Morton Manual 258:
Permutation or Barter. . . . This is a contract now of no importance.
