PROFANE, adj. Also Sc. form profawn (Ags. 1853 W. Blair Aberbrothock 23). Sc. usage in comb. profane spaver, a type of trouser-fly fastening.Bch. 1930:
The aul men, mony o' them, at onyrate, wid hae breeks wi' profane spavers. They likit the decent aul flat spaver, that buttoned up wi' twa buttons.
