REFEIR, n. In phr. to the refeir, in proportion (Sc. 1808 Jam.).Dmf. 1899 Country Schoolmaster (Wallace) 352:
The cook has as much work to the refeir as has the tablemaid.

[Two sources have phs. fused in this word, viz. O.Sc. refer, a matter referred, 1602, a reference, 1697, and Affeir, v., used as a noun under the influence of Effeir, n., q.v. See also Effeir, v. For the long vowel phs. cf. also Mid.Eng. form refere.]
