ROOTSIE, n. Also rootsy. A horse of a reddish, chestnut or sorrel colouring (Sh. 1866 Edm. Gl., 1932 J. Saxby Trad. Lore 196).

[A hypocoristic form in -Sie, q.v., the first element prob. representing Norw. rød, dial. raud, O.N. rauðr, red. Cf. Sh. Norn rødi, a red horse.]
