¶RÜTER, n. Sh. sea-taboo name for the piked dog-fish, Squalus acanthias (Sh. 1814 Irvine MSS.).
[Orig. obscure. ? Ad. Norw. røyta, to gore, stab, sc. ‘the stabber', from the wounds it can inflict with its dorsal spines when caught.]
