SAP, n.3, v.3 Also sapp. Dim. sappie.
I. n. A kind of bait used in eel-fishing, consisting of a number of worms strung on woollen yarn and formed into a bunch or clump (wm.Sc. 1887 Jam.); in dim. form pl.: fragments of fish guts tied at the end of a string and used as bait for crabs (Abd. 1955). Also in se.Eng. dial.
II. v. To fish with a sap (wm.Sc. 1887 Jam.).
[Orig. uncertain. The Ken. dial. usage seems to preclude association with Sap, n.2]
