SCANTLING, n. Sc. usage in comb. scantling-line, a fishing-line with hooks attached, fixed to the bank of a stream and left all night. Cf. Scantack.Crm. 1869 H. Miller Tales and Sk. 219:
To set my little scantling-line for the trouts an' the eels.

[The form is somewhat doubtful. The orig. may have been scantlin(e) (scantling line being tautological), from scant, short, restricted. Cf. Scantack.]
