SCARP, n. Also skarp. A bare barren piece of ground (Ork. 1929 Marw.; Sh. 1969); gravelly soil, esp. by the sea. Adj. skarpy, bare, barren, of ground (Marw.). Phr. scarpit grun(d) (Sh. 1969). [skɑrp]Mry. 1914 H. J. Warwick Tales 43:
They wad be lyin' doon on the scarp.

[Cf. Norw. skarp, O.N. skarpr, of land, barren, unfertile. The word however may be merely an alteration of Scaup, n.1, 2.]
