Sc. 1934 Scotsman (25 Sept.) 10:
Half moose, half bird, he seeks his shang When swallows rest frae whitterin.

[Orig. somewhat uncertain. Phs. a variant of n.Eng. dial. shag, a large slice of bread and cheese, ? orig. connected with Chack, n.3 There may have been conflation with Whang, id.]
