SHOUGBAND, n. The strap or rope which goes round the back of a horse's head where it joins the neck, to keep the halter on (Cai. 1970). [′ʃʌukbən]Cai. 1916 John o' Groat Jnl. (31 March):
The tether had its "headsteel," "sweel" and "baukie," and when a beast was bad for throwing off its "headsteel" a "shougband" was put down.
