SHROOD, n., v. Also shreud. Sc. forms and usage of Eng. shroud (Abd. 1909 J. Tennant Jeannie Jaffray 17; Kcb. 1913 A. Anderson Later Poems 88; Ags. 1924 M. Angus Tinker's Road 9). See P.L.D. § 38. In Sc. and dial. Eng. usage: the guttering wax of a burning candle which runs down the sides and seems to swathe the candle like a shroud, superstitiously looked on as an omen of death (Sc. 1904 E.D.D.; Fif. 1970).
