SMONGIE, n. Also smonge; smjonger, -g(n)i, smungnie (Sh. 1814 Irvine MSS.), smjungi (Jak.), smongnir (Sh. 1881 Williamson MSS.). A sea-taboo term for an eel (Sh. 1908 Jak. (1928)). Cf. Smugger. [′sm(j)ɔŋg(j)i]Sh. 1898–1900 Shetland News (17 Dec., 9 June):
A barr'l half foo o' sprikklin smonge. . . . Geng i' da watter wi' fresh haddiks fil aboot Johnsmas, an' dan begin wi' smongie.
