SMUTHERIN, n. Also smitherin. [′smʌðərɪn]

1. A little piece, small amount, as of jam on bread (Ork. 1929 Marw., Ork. 1970).

2. The first or last traces of light at dawn or dusk.Ork. 1929 Marw.:
The first (or last) smitherins o' day.

[Orig. somewhat doubtful, phs. a vbl.n. variant of Eng. smother, esp. in its dial. sense of to cover with spots, daub, smear.]
