AVEL, v. To knock off the awns of barley before threshing it, to hummel corn. Hence aveller, the part of a threshingmachine which does this.Sc. 1858 H. Stephens Farm Implements 379:
The corn is then passed to the "avelling" apparatus or hummeller. . . . After passing through the "aveller," the corn is lifted up by the elevator.
