¶BRIEF, v. Sc. usage, of a precentor: to lead off the psalm, to read the line first and then sing it. See Line, I. 4.Ork. 1709 A. W. Johnston Church in Ork. (1940) 71:
James Crear "entered befor the Session and did agree to brief the Psalm for a year."
[A nonce usage, poss. due to a misreading of the MS. The usual word is lead or line.]
