CAFFEE, n. Sc. †form of Eng. coffee. Hence caffee-pat, coffee-pot (e.Lth. 1899 W. Sinclair Sc. Life & Humour 64).
[The Sc. form retains the orig. vowel as Fr. café, It. caffè, Ger. kaffee, etc. and the pron. [′kfe] is still occas. heard. The Eng. -o- form appears first about the end of the 17th c.]
