CHAPEL, n. As in Eng., a church not belonging to the established religion of the country, in Scot. applied specif. to the Scottish Episcopal Church, or to the Roman Catholie Church, but not to any of the free churches of the Presbyterian denomination. Gen.Sc. For Sc. form see Chaipel.Sc. 1710 Short Acct. Grievances Episc. Clergy (1712) 16:
The inhabitants of Old Aberdeen, who are of the Episcopal Persuasion . . . to our great Surprize, an Order is lately come from your Majesty's Advocate in North Britain, to shut up our Chapel; for no other Reason whatever may be pretended, but because we make use of the Liturgy of the Church of England.
