CLAD, n. A kind of mattock used in raking kelp ash.Sc. 1799 Prize Essays Highl. Soc. Trans. I. 37:
The instruments used for this purpose (to prevent the kelp slag from hardening suddenly) are strong narrow clads, or clatts, with long handles of iron. Sc. 1807 Farmer's Mag. (Feb.) 42:
Hooks or sickles for cutting the ware, kelping irons or clads.
