CODDIN(G), n. 1. (1) A stone base for the jamb-stones of a fireplace on the ground floor of a building (Sc. 1861 Stephens & Burn Farm Buildings 538); (2) stones inserted in a wall to support the ends of joists or beams, pad-stones (Sc. 1952 Builder (20 June) 942); (3) the last course of slates, much shorter than the ordinary slate, put on a roof just below the ridge (Cai., Fif. 1975).
