CORNEL, n. Also cornal. Sc. spellings of Eng. colonel (Ags. 1853 W. Blair Aberbrothock 45, m.Lth. 1885 J. Strathesk More Bits 161, cornal; Lnk. 1890 H. Muir Rutherglen 42; Per. 1897 R. M. Fergusson Village Poet 35). [-r- spellings are recorded in Eng. from the 16th c. and the pronunciation with r has prevailed in St. Eng. since c.1800.]
