†GOGIE, n. Also kogi (Sh. 1908 Jak. (1928)). A sea-taboo name for the land as opposed to the sea, the land as it looms up when seen from the water (Sh. a.1838 Jam. MSS. XII. 97). [Jak. suggests deriv. from Coag, v.1, sc. ‘to peep, to raise the head to look’ metaphorically applied to the land appearing in sight.]
