‡GRITTEEN, n. Also grittin. A peal of thunder (Sh. a.1838 Jam. MSS. XII. 100, 1908 Jak. (1928) Sh. 1975), freq. in pl. = thunder (Sh. 1975). In sea-taboo usage. [Jak. suggests a reduced form of *grylting. Norw. dial. grylta, to grunt, rumble.]
