STRUTH, v. Of a mill-wheel: appar. to fix bars or braces in the circumference of an overshot wheel to which the water-boards are bolted. Ppl.adj. struthed, vbl.n. struthing. See Ewe.Rnf. 1715 Brigend Papers MSS. (Paisley Library):
The outer-wheel new struthed and ewed. . . . The outer wheel sufficient as to the Arms and sole: but Struthing and Ewes almost Gone.
[Orig. doubtful, poss. a form of Eng. dial. stoothe, a, to stud (Cf. Stoothe), conflated with strut.]
