DOUGAL. A Highland name found in the Lowlands in the 18th c., so spelt (wm.Sc. 1724 D. Graham Writings (1883) I. 11, Sc. 1817 Scott Rob Roy xxii.; Per. 1915 Wilson L. Strathearn 165) and in the form Dugald as with the philosopher Dugald Stewart (1753–1828). Familiar form Dougie (Arg. 1906 N. Munro Vital Spark xii.). [′dugəl]
