ADAM. Used attrib. to describe a classical style of architecture and furniture of chaste and graceful proportions designed, esp. after Roman and Italian models, by Robert Adam (1728–92) and his brother James (1730–94), natives of Fife and later architects to George III. The Adelphi in London was built by and so named from the brothers (Gr. δελφο).
