BUCHAN. 1. In phr. Buchan's cold spell, one of a series of spells of cold weather occurring approximately at the same time each year, according to a theory based on weather statistics put forward by Alexander Buchan (1827–1907), of Kinnesswood, Kinrossshire, in 1867 (Handy Book of Meteorology (1868) xiv.).

2. In comb. Buchan trap, in plumbing, a water-sealed disconnecting trap in the waste pipe of a plumbing system, patented by W. P. Buchan, of Glasgow in 1875 (1875 W. P. Buchan Plumbing 215, 1972 J. Hastings Plumber's Companion 48).
