COUPER. In phr. Couper-Kekulé theory of molecular structure, the theory of valency as applied to the carbon compounds in 1858 by Archibald Scott Couper (1831–92), of Kirkintilloch, propounded independently at the same time by F. A. Kekulé in Germany.
