FINLAYSON. After George Finlayson (1790–1823), of Thurso, botanist and surgeon in Siam. Derivs.: 1. Finlaysonia, in Bot., a genus of trailing shrub of Eastern India akin to convolvulus (1830 N. Wallich Plant. Asiat. Rar. II. 49); 2. finlaysonii, in Zool., a specif. name of Pycnonotus, a kind of Malaysian thrush (1844 T. Horsfield in Annals & Mag. Nat. Hist. XIII. 411), Paradoxuras or civet of Eastern India (1832 Proc. Comm. Sci. Zool. Soc. XVII. 68), Sciurus, a Javanese squirrel (1827 T. Horsfield Zool. Researches Java 7).
