GARDENIA. Bot. A genus of evergreen flowering shrubs, chiefly Oriental, esp. Gardenia florida, the Cape Jasmine (1861 J. Ellis in Philosoph. Trans. LI. ii. 934). Also gardeni, as a specific name of various fishes and reptiles.
[Called after Alexander Garden (1730–91), of Charleston, U.S.A., son of an Aberdonian, and himself a graduate of Edinburgh University, correspondent of Linnaeus.]
