GRAPHOPHONE. The name given by Alexander Graham Bell (see Bel) to an instrument which he invented in 1880 to reproduce sounds by the movement of a needle on a wax cylinder, and which developed by later improvements into the gramophone.
[The word was probably suggested by Edison's invention in 1876 of the phonograph.]
