LYELL. After Sir Charles Lyell (1797–1875), of Kinnordy, Angus, a distinguished geologist, physicist and botanist.

1. Astron. A ring or imperfect crater in the western part of the moon.

2. Deriv. Lyellia, a genus of moss found in India (1819 R. Brown in Trans. Linnaean Soc. XII. 561).

3. Deriv. Lyellite, a basic copper and calcium sulphate, now called devillite (1844 N. S. Maskelyne in Chemical News X. 263).

4. In forms lyelli(i), lyellana, lyellella, lyellianus, specif. names of various insects, shells and fossils, Aethyopus, Anacampsis, Anchylopera, Arca, Pecten, Crassatella, Cephalaspis, Hamites, etc.
