RICHARDSONII. Bot. Specific name of various plants, esp. some associated with Sir John Franklin's expeditions to the Arctic to which Richardson was surgeon and naturalist. See his botanical appendix to Franklin's Narrative (1823) and R. Brown's notes in Misc. Works (Ray Soc.) II. 511–27. Also Zool. as the specif. name of some animals, e.g. Capito richardsoni, Richardson's barbet or puff-bird of Africa and India (1816 Viellot Analyse 27), Genetta (or Poiana) richardsoni, the African linsang or civet (1842 T. R. Thomson in Annals & Mag. Nat. Hist. (Nov.) 203). Richardsons's skua is a common name for Stercorarius parasiticus.
