SIBBALD. After Sir Robert Sibbald (1641–1722), of Leslie in Fife, Professor of Medicine at Edinburgh, one of the founders of the Royal Society, London, naturalist. Hence Sibbaldia, a genus of Potentilla, called by Linnaeus after him. Also sibbaldus, as a specific name for various plants and animals, esp. Balaenoptera, the blue rorqual, Catadon, a cachalot or sperm-whale; Strombus sibbaldii, a helmet shell, etc., etc.
