CHEGGIE, n. Informal word for a chestnut (Dmb., Dmf., Rxb. 2000s).Sc. 1997 Scotsman 28 Jan 14:
Clinton's ten-year-old son, Aaron, sent the mandarins of St Andrew's House "cheggies" (conkers) from a copse of chestnut trees which has supplied Croy children for generations but stands in the path of the proposed motorway.
Sc. 1999 Scotsman 22 Sep 11:
"Cheggies" (chestnuts) lie on the ground, still mostly in their spiky jackets, but gleaming richly inside. Hips and haws replace the fragrant single roses of our straggly back-fence hedge, and already motley heaps of dying leaves are thick under our feet.
