JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL, n.phr. From the late 1930s to the 1960s, a state secondary school providing less academic courses than the senior secondary school for pupils who were not successful in the qualifying examination (see s.v. qualify v. 4. Only schools offering full five-year certificate courses would now be designated 'secondary' and they would teach pupils who were deemed to be academically qualified at 12. The vast majority, who were not, were to complete their education in a new 'Advanced Division' sector with lower standards of staffing and resources. These schools eventually emerged as the 'junior secondaries' of the late 1930s, while the 'senior secondary' sector consisted of those granted secondary status in Circular 44.
