SNOWDON, prop. n. Also †Snadoun (Sc. 1710 J. Chamberlayne Present State Scot. 414), erron. Suandome. Sc. comb. Snowdon Herald, one of the former six Scottish heralds, first mentioned in 1449. The office is at present vacant, because of the reduction in number of the heralds to three in 1867. Cf. Ross, prop. n., and Rothesay.Sc. 1742 A. Nisbet System of Heraldry II. 171:
Suandome is named from Swandome Castle in the Shire of Ross, and the Residence of our ancient Scots Kings.
Sc. 1863 G. Seton Law Heraldry Scot. 37:
The Heralds attached to the Lyon Court are six in number, viz., Islay, Rothesay, Marchmont, Albany, Ross, and Snowdon, and they have their precedency according to the dates of their creation.

[The name appears to be taken from Snowdon, a part of the hill on which Stirling Castle is built.]
